SignTalk-Gh Dataset Released to Improve Healthcare Access for Hearing-Impaired Ghanaians

The SignTalk Project, under the Artificial Intelligence For Sustainable Development (AI4SD) initiative, has released the SignTalk-Gh Dataset, a collection of 10,000 Ghanaian Sign Language (GSL) videos developed for healthcare use.

The dataset, now publicly available, is built on over 4,000 structured sentences representing clinical interactions across areas such as general consultations, pediatrics, dermatology, mental health, and pharmacy services.

Dr. Emmanuel Ahene, Lead of the SignTalk Project noted, the release supports efforts to make healthcare more accessible for hearing-impaired individuals in Ghana.

“We are making real progress toward bridging the communication gap between speech and hearing-impaired individuals and healthcare professionals in Ghana.

“Because equal access to healthcare is not a privilege, it’s a right,” he revealed.

The project is part of the broader AI4SD initiative, supported by the French Embassy in Ghana with support from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

10,000 Ghanaian Sign Language (GSL) videos developed for healthcare use.

In Ghana, where interpreter services are limited, the dataset is expected to aid in the development of AI systems that can recognize and translate GSL in healthcare settings.

Researchers and developers are invited to use the dataset and collaborate on creating accessible health technologies.
